MASVINGO- Echoes of laughter and ululation filled the room as the old people at their Mucheke foster home sumptuous meals that were prepared for them by the Zimbabwe Open University students from Masvingo Regional Campus.

 It was a day to remember for the elderly as they spent the day interacting with students from the higher tertiary education institution led by the regional Students Representative Council (SRC) secretary Admire Dhovie last week.

The ZOU Masvingo Region SRC donated various food stuffs to the inmates at the Old People’s Home and spent the day cleaning, preparing meals and doing laundry for the elderly.

Part of the donation included mealie meal, rice, sugar, Mazoe Orange Crush, washing powder and several other food stuffs.

Speaking during the hand over of the goodies Dhovie said the grocery it was part of their  collective social responsibility to help the needy whenever they have the capacity to do so.

 “This is our first donation so far and we have decided to start with Mucheke Old People’s Home because we saw it appropriate to start with our elderly who can no longer fend for themselves because of old age,” said Dhovie.

The house keeper in charge of the Home, Matopos Chaka expressed his gratitude to the ZOU students called for more well-wishers to assist them whenever possible as they mainly rely on donors because the Government grants are not enough or they come late.

“This donation will go a long way in providing balanced diet for the elderly at this institution. We cherish this relationship with the students as they have shown unparalled love for their grannies.

“Let me take this opportunity to appeal to those out there to come to our rescue with anything they can afford as we have many issues that need to be attended to but we do not have the capacity,” said Chaka.

One by one the inmates took to the podium to express their gratitude to the SRC for organizing such a rare event for them.
